There are over 4,000 septic systems upstream of the Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB) drinking water intake in the McKenzie Watershed. Properly maintained septic systems and drainfields can greatly reduce the risk of contamination in the river and save homeowners money over time. EWEB has a financial assistance program available to homeowners upstream of the drinking water intake at Hayden Bridge.
Septic System Statistics
There are over 4,000 septic systems in the McKenzie Watershed above EWEB’s drinking water intake.
The EPA estimates that 10-25% of septic systems fail and can release untreated or partially treated wastewater into groundwater or nearby surface water.
Through EWEB’s septic system assistance program, approximately 700 private septic systems have been inspected since 2008.
EWEB has issued 7 zero-interest loans for residents faced with major repairs/replacements to their septic systems.
